If this is a joke, it is in _very_ poor taste.  If the original author was
serious (or if Wayne is serious...I guess that's possible) then our descent
into a technological dark age has accelerated frighteningly.  No wonder
people believe RF causes cancer!

Invitation to Cuba

The Cuban Amateur Radio community has invited American amateurs to
participate in a joint operation with Cuban amateurs in the 1994
ARRL June VHF QSO Party.

ARRL Oklahoma Section Manager Joe Lynch, N6CL, was invited to lead
the group, during a visit to Cuba the week of February 7.  The
operation would take place from Bellomonte.  Officials of the
Federacion Radioaficionados de Cuba (FRC) said they also have taken
under consideration a proposal from an American group for a joint
operation from Cuba on the HF bands in 1995.

Lynch, in Cuba for a week as a member of a Methodist Church work
team, extended greetings from ARRL officials, presented FRC
President Ing. Pedro Rodriguez, CO2RP, with a certificate of
participation for the June 1993 ARRL VHF QSO Party, and also
presented an author's certificate to Arne Coro, CO2KK, for his
article in December 1993 QST.

Lynch's informal meetings with FRC officials were publicized on
radio, television, and in the print media.

Joe Lynch is VHF editor of CQ Magazine and also is editor of the
QCWA Journal.

Well, yeah, it does sort of conjure up that stereotype.

But even Daytonites don't walk.

Last year at Dayton, we were staying at the Radisson (with the rest of the
RTTY types!).  After an afternoon of wandering around the show, I had myself
a craving for a bit of orange juice.  I'd have ordered from room service, but
I wasn't about to pay that kind of money for simple OJ.  I checked at the
gas station right there at the Radisson -- no luck.  I asked at the front desk
if there was some place I could go.  They suggested a mall down the street.
Having no car, I asked them if the mall was within walking distance.  Their answer
was to strongly suggest that I NOT walk along the road, no matter how far I
was going, because the road was DANGEROUS.  Of course, I DID end up walking along
the road -- across the street and down to the convenience store a half-block down.
No death or dismemberment, but it wasn't a good time, either (no sidewalk except
across the I-75 bridge, rushing traffic, etc.)...

I'm personally hoping that the Radisson is going to be running shuttles to the
show, because I don't relish sitting in the traffic jam (which happened last
year, even with loaded busses) for an hour or more in a Standard-Shift vehicle,
and it's WAAAAAY too far from the Radisson to walk, even if the road wasn't
'DANGEROUS', as the folks at the Radisson claim.

The manual says something about the last 3 DTMF digits being displayed
in memory 7, but did not mention the fact that it scrolls! :)

My old Icom manuals had more pictures and charts than my FT-530 book
does. I liked that. The FT-530's manual is also incorrect in a few
places, REALLY annoying. Oh well...still a good radio...

I've got a TS-440S-AT about which I have mixed feelings (but _mostly_
good).  As a mobile rig and for general all-round use, it's nice; it has
some problems with a high-QRM environment like a contest that might be
improved by more filtered stages or something.  It's got adequate
selectivity from the 500-Hz filter on CW, but a really strong nearby signal
can "pump" the AGC (that's a new term I saw here recently, but it certainly
describes the effect well).  Be nice if you could just shut off the AGC
completely.

Quality control has been something of a problem.  When I got it, the CPU
died; it went back to the shop for a couple of months, they fixed and
returned it, and the same thing happened again.  Finally they said the
problem was a bad socket for the CPU; they replaced that (but they'd had it
for about four of the first six months I owned it), and it's worked fine
ever since (five or six years, now).  The other problem has been poor
contact on the oscillator board.  The oscillator that covers 20 meters quit
working; I did a bit of troubleshooting, and tracked it down to a cold
joint on the board.  I re-soldered it, and 20 has been fine ever since.
But the oscillator for 10 meters just recently did the same thing; I
haven't had a chance to do the troubleshooting yet, but I don't expect it
to be a serious problem to fix.  One good thing is that you can get to the
circuits fairly easily.

It lacks an output/input for a transverter; this is annoying me right now,
as I'd like to use it as an IF for 2 meters and 70 cm.  If that's not a
concern, ignore the comment.

In its defense, I should add that I use it hard, dragging it in and out of
the house, and operating it from the car.  It runs off a car battery nicely
at reduced power for emergency operation, and has enough bells and whistles
to (almost) keep me happy.

Get one with the built-in antenna tuner.  When I bought it, I was really
looking for one without it--big mistake in hindsight.  I'm really glad I
could  only find the ones _with_ the tuner.

I'd like to hear other opinions about this also. My 1988 Acura Integra (another
Honda product, for those who may not know) has exhibited a fair amount of
ignition noise since it was new. It's not coming through the power cord, as it
exists even on battery operated rigs.

I've had them check everything they could, and replaced the distributor cap
and rotor. I also had the 'ignitor' replaced on recall (whatever that is).
It's still pretty noisy on my 2 m. HT and scanner.

Any ideas? (other than get rid of the car, I mean)

I believe the part in question is the IGNITER.  It looks like a large
two-bladed fuse.  I have a 1990 Civic which was nice and quiet until I had
Honda tune it up.  Then it was noisy.  That went on for about 7 months.
Then the darn thing failed.  No warning.  It just quit.

I got the igniter replaced and the noise went away.

I suggest that you suggest to Honda that they try another igniter and see
if that cures your noise problem.

Hope that this solves your problem and that it does not fail on you.

Yes. Have them replace your ignition wires with low-noise type.  I believe
that they are sometimes called Silicon Ignition Wires - but I may be wrong.
When I replaced the wires on my Bronco II, it made a world of difference.

As I understand it, early models had the audio deviation pot set too low
and the touch tone deviation set too high.  The settings produced low
audio and DTMF tones were not accepted by repeaters. I also noticed that
the same early models had a different default frequency when reset as well
as some strange additional defaults that are changed when programming.
I do not know where the pot's are that must be adjusted.  Has anyone
bought the service manual?  I believe audio deviation is normally  about
3.5 KHz and DTMF deviation is ~2.5 KHz.

Context. Context is everything. Go back and check it yourself and you'll
see why I got upset at the original poster.

My last comment on this (Ha!) is: Don't fly at night, for that's
when the pilot of your aircraft will be trying to use 6 MHz.

     Geosynchronous satellites are experiencing magnetopause crossings and

where I took my exams, if you do not pass the codes, they don't let you
take the written exams (makes sense). So your being able to take the
written exam without the 13 wpm is something new to me.

Your Certificate of Successful Completion for the General written is good
for one calendar year from its date of issue (the day you took the exam).
Keep studying on the 13 wpm--you'll get there.
